Worth changing if you want your water heater to last
This product came well packaged and in good condition. The key to this job is an impact wrench, socket, extension, and locking needlenose pliers to remove your old anode rod. I changed mine out at 6 years and it was calcified (useless), but only 30% consumed. The length was the same as the original rod and went in easy (with ptfe tape and ptfe pipe dope). I think inspecting your anode rod is a waste of time. If you take it out, you might as well replace the rod. I also vacuumed out as much sediment from my tank through the lower element hole and replaced the crappy drain valve with a full port ball valve (Will not clog and will actually flush out sediment). So with ~$50 I added years of life to a $750 water heater. It is a good rainy day project for any homeowner.
Best Bang For The Buck
Ordered poduct. This anode bar is 32" long. Worked great. Pulled old one out using 1/2" Craftsman flex breaker bar with 1 1/16" Craftsman 6 Point Socket. Worked great. 5 minute job. Reliance is part of A O Smith who makes several brands including mine (KENMORE). This is 1/2 price of sears parts direct. When teflon taping threads, make sure you only tape top part of threads. Bar has to be grounded to tank to work properly. Check YouTUBE out for videos on how to install. Replace this every couple years and water heater will last forever. Thanks for reading.
Cheaper than replacing a waterheater!
I was surprised to learn recently, that anodes are designed as inexpensive sacrificial substitutes for expensive water heaters. We have very hard water and in 13 years have replaced 4 water heaters (we have one at each end of the house). When researching new water heater replacements and technologies, I came across a DIY article about anodes. I asked a local plumber about it and he confirmed that an anode's sole purpose is to significantly extend the life of a water heater but of course, he didn't carry any in stock. Removed the anode from my 4 year old heater and it looked like cancer or something had almost completely eaten it away. Took it to Home Depot and Lowes but nobody there seemed to know what I was talking about. Decided to search the internet and the first listing was this on Amazon. Did some more checking but eventually just came back and got this thru Amazon. It was an easy 2 minute replacement. I am happy. Only gave it a 4 star because only time will tell if it really...
